The Police were one of the most famous British bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s, but my first real encounter with them was through Japanese television.
I saw “Message in a Bottle” on Best Hit USA, and I immediately thought they looked and sounded incredibly cool.
At first, Sting’s presence was striking.
But what truly drew me in was Andy Summers’ guitar.
It was not a traditional rock guitar sound based on heavy riffs or long solos.
His playing seemed to change the atmosphere of the room itself.
“Message in a Bottle” still carried traces of punk energy, but it was already moving into something more sophisticated.
The song had urgency, loneliness, reggae influence, and a nervous urban feeling.
The Japanese title, Kodoku no Message, captured its emotional core very well.
Andy Summers’ guitar created space.
It floated, echoed, and left room for silence.
In that sense, his approach connects with other post-punk and new wave guitarists such as Keith Levene, Daniel Ash, Adrian Belew, Warren Cuccurullo, and later The Edge.
These guitarists did not simply play notes.
They changed the emotional temperature of the music.
They transformed guitar from a lead instrument into atmosphere, architecture, shadow, and landscape.
Later Police songs such as “Every Breath You Take” became beautifully written pop songs.
They are undeniably great, but for me, the first impact of “Message in a Bottle” remains the strongest.
It still has the tension of a band standing between punk, new wave, reggae, and something not yet fully named.
This is also why The Police are important to the world of Velvet Ashes.
Not because Velvet Ashes directly imitates them, but because that sense of space, distance, loneliness, and atmospheric guitar remains deeply meaningful.

そこで見た “Message in a Bottle”、邦題「孤独のメッセージ」は、当時の自分にとって非常に印象的だった。
スティングの存在感はもちろん強かった。
金髪で、若く、鋭い雰囲気があり、映像としても非常に格好良かった。
しかし、実際に自分の耳を強く引きつけたのは、アンディ サマーズのギターだった。
あのギターは、普通のロックギターとは違っていた。
ブルース的なリフや、前に出て弾きまくるソロではない。
むしろ、音の隙間や響きによって、曲全体の空間を変えてしまうようなギターだった。
“Message in a Bottle” には、まだパンクの名残りがあったと思う。
演奏には緊張感があり、無駄が少なく、どこか神経質で、都市の孤独が感じられた。
しかし同時に、レゲエの影響やニューウェーブ的な洗練もあり、単なるパンクでもロックでもなかった。
この「空間を変えるギター」という意味では、アンディ サマーズは非常に重要な存在だったと思う。
キース レヴィン、ダニエル アッシュ、エイドリアン ブリュー、ウォーレン ククルロ、そして後のジ エッジにも通じるものがある。
彼らのギターは、単に旋律を弾くためのものではなかった。
空気を歪ませ、風景を作り、曲の温度や距離感を変えるものだった。
ロックギターが「前に出る楽器」から、「空間を作る楽器」へ変わっていく時代の感覚が、そこにはあった。
その後のThe Policeには、“Every Breath You Take” や “Roxanne”、“De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da” など、多くの名曲がある。
“Every Breath You Take” は単純に良い曲だし、メロディーも非常に美しい。
ただ、自分にとって一番強烈だったのは、やはり最初に見た “Message in a Bottle” だった。
あの曲には、まだジャンル名が完全に定まっていない時代の緊張感があった。
パンク、ニューウェーブ、レゲエ、ロック、ポップが混ざり合いながら、何か新しいものへ変化していく瞬間だった。
Velvet AshesにとってThe Policeが重要なのは、単に有名な英国バンドだからではない。
むしろ、アンディ サマーズのギターに感じた「空間」「距離感」「孤独」「響き」の感覚が、後のポストパンク、ゴシック、ダークウェーブ的な音楽感覚にも繋がっているからである。
