Before everything became complex,
rock and roll was simple.
And that simplicity had a shape.
I didn’t grow up listening to albums by
Elvis Presley.
But when I started playing guitar,
Chuck Berry was unavoidable.
His songs were not just music.
They were a language.
I practiced Johnny B. Goode again and again.
The riffs, the double stops, the movement of the fingers－
they became part of how I understood rock.
I even played it live in a copy band,
alongside songs like
Jumpin’ Jack Flash by The Rolling Stones.
Those songs were not something to admire from a distance.
They were something to use.
Of course, there were other guitarists.
Jimi Hendrix changed the sound itself.
Jimmy Page expanded its weight and structure.
Keith Richards refined the power of riffs.
But for me, Chuck Berry was different.
He was the starting point.
Even now, I still have the sheet music.
I don’t play it as often as I used to.
But I know where my foundation comes from.
His music was simple.
But it made everything else possible.

すべてが複雑になる前、
ロックンロールはもっとシンプルだった。

だが、ギターを弾き始めたとき、
