By the late 1990s, rock had already been broken once.

Nirvana had brought rawness back.
Bands like Nine Inch Nails and
The Smashing Pumpkins
had pushed it inward.

Then came another shift.

I first became aware of Radiohead
through rockin'on.
At the time, they were strongly supported, especially around Kid A.

Their earlier work was easy to understand.
Albums like The Bends had clear melodies and structure.

But when I heard OK Computer,
my first reaction was simple:

“What is this?”

It wasn’t that it was bad.
It just didn’t follow the rules I expected.

Then came Kid A.

At that point, they were already considered one of the most important bands.
Still, I couldn’t help but think:

“Why does this sell?”

It didn’t sound like something made to be popular.
There were no obvious singles.
No clear direction.

And yet, it stayed.

I didn’t fully understand it.
But I kept the CDs.

Looking back, maybe that was the point.

Rock had once been about expression.
Then it became about structure.

Radiohead quietly removed even that.

They didn’t just change the sound.
They changed the way we listen.

rockin'onだった。

特にKid Aの頃は、強く推されていた印象がある。

だが、OK Computerを聴いたとき、
最初に浮かんだのは

「なんだこれは？」

という感覚だった。

悪いわけではない。
ただ、これまでのロックの文脈から外れていた。

そしてKid A。

業界的にも一押しのバンドだったと思う。
それでも正直、

「なんでこれが売れるんだ？」

という疑問があった。

売れるための音には聴こえなかった。
わかりやすい曲もない。
方向性も見えにくい。

それでも、手元に残った。

理解できたわけではない。
だが、なぜか離れなかった。

振り返れば、それこそが本質だったのかもしれない。

ロックはかつて、表現だった。
やがて構造になった。

そしてRadioheadは、
その構造すら静かに取り払った。

音を変えたのではない。
“聴き方”を変えたのだと思う。
