When The Stone Roses first appeared, their music felt both new and strangely familiar to me.

Their debut album carried a strong sense of classic British rock tradition. There were echoes of older British bands, strong melodies, and a musical heritage that felt authentic. It sounded modern, yet it also reminded me of the long history of British rock music. I remember thinking that it was quite good, and that there was something genuine about their sound.

However, when their second album arrived, the band changed dramatically.

The rhythm became more dance-oriented and powerful, and the guitar sound grew much stronger and more blues-driven. The music felt heavier, more confident, and more energetic. I personally enjoyed this second phase even more than the debut.

Although their musical style was very different from bands like Guns N' Roses, I often felt a connection between the guitar playing of John Squire and Slash. Both players seemed to be rooted in a blues-based approach, and to my ears, both carried a strong influence from Jimmy Page. You could clearly hear that heritage even in John Squire’s later band, The Seahorses.

At that time, music magazines like Rockin' On in Japan strongly promoted what was called the Manchester movement. The Stone Roses were often presented as one of the leading bands of that scene, along with groups like Happy Mondays.

What struck me most was the difference in atmosphere compared to bands like The Smiths.

The Smiths had a darker, more introspective mood. But the Manchester bands felt brighter and more uplifting. There was a sense of happiness in the music − a feeling of collective energy and celebration. To me, their sound carried a kind of euphoria.

I had the opportunity to see The Stone Roses live in Fukuoka on September 21, 1995, during their Second Coming tour.

The concert took place on a Thursday evening at Fukuoka Sunpalace. At that time, the band was already in a later phase, and the lineup had changed after Mani left the group. Despite those changes, the performance left a strong impression on me.

I remember the audience moving and dancing freely, each person enjoying the music in their own way. The sound quality and volume were excellent, and the atmosphere of the concert was very powerful.

Looking back now, The Stone Roses represented a turning point in British rock music. They carried the traditions of the past, yet they also opened the door to a new era − an era that would later lead to the rise of Britpop and the alternative scene of the 1990s.

Looking back now, that concert remains one of the most memorable live experiences of my life.

ザ・ストーン・ローゼズが登場したとき、私はその音楽を新しいと感じると同時に、どこか懐かしさも覚えました。

彼らのファーストアルバムには、古い英国ロックの伝統が色濃く感じられました。しっかりしたメロディと音楽的な背景があり、現代的でありながら、英国ロックの歴史につながる感覚があったのです。「なかなか良いな」と素直に思ったのを覚えています。

しかしセカンドアルバムが登場すると、バンドは大きく変化しました。

リズムはよりダンサブルで力強くなり、ギターの音も一段とブルージーで迫力のあるものになりました。音楽全体がより重く、より自信に満ちたものになり、私はむしろこのセカンド期の彼らの音楽を強く気に入るようになりました。

音楽性はガンズ・アンド・ローゼズとはまったく異なっていましたが、ジョン・スクワイアとスラッシュのギターには、どこか共通するものを感じていました。二人ともブルースを基盤としたギターアプローチを持ち、私の耳にはジミー・ペイジからの強い影響が感じられました。ジョン・スクワイアの後のバンド、シーホーセズを聴いても、その影響は明確に感じられました。

当時、日本の音楽雑誌『ロッキング・オン』などでは、いわゆるマンチェスター・ムーブメントが強力に取り上げられていました。ストーン・ローゼズは、ハッピー・マンデーズなどと並んで、そのシーンを代表するバンドとして紹介されていたと思います。

私が特に印象的だったのは、スミスとの雰囲気の違いでした。

スミスにはどこか暗く内省的な空気がありましたが、マンチェスターのバンドには、もっと明るく、前向きな感覚がありました。そこには、音楽そのものから伝わってくる「多幸感」のようなものがあったのです。

1995年9月21日、Second Coming ツアーの一環として、福岡サンパレスで行われたストーン・ローゼズの公演を観ました。

その日は木曜日の夜公演でした。当時のバンドはすでに後期の段階に入っており、マニが脱退した後の編成でしたが、それでも非常に印象的なライブでした。

観客はそれぞれ自分なりに音楽に乗って踊りながら楽しんでおり、音量や音質も非常に良く、会場全体に強いエネルギーが満ちていました。

振り返ってみると、ストーン・ローゼズは英国ロックの歴史における一つの転換点を象徴するバンドだったのだと思います。彼らは過去の伝統を受け継ぎながら、同時に新しい時代への扉を開いた存在でした。その流れはやがて、1990年代のブリットポップやオルタナティブ・シーンへとつながっていったのです。
