Hanoi Rocks − A Real-Time Band in My Youth
The Bridge That Connected My Rock and Roll Journey

When I was a child,
I grew up listening to the Rolling Stones.

They were my first rock and roll band,
and their sound became the foundation of my ears.

When I entered junior high school,
my real-time band was Hanoi Rocks.

I discovered them through a Japanese music magazine.
They looked glamorous − makeup, scarves, and attitude −
but at their core, they were a true rock and roll band.

Their melodies were catchy and surprisingly familiar
to Japanese listeners.

Songs like Don't You Ever Leave Me,
Malibu Beach Nightmare,
and Cheyenne
were very easy to get into.

They naturally stayed in my ears.
They were rock songs
that felt both exciting and accessible.

What impressed me most
was the guitar playing of Andy McCoy.

His style was simple, raw,
and full of rock and roll spirit.
I thought it was incredibly cool.

Hanoi Rocks often talked about Johnny Thunders,
and through them, I discovered his music
and eventually the New York Dolls.

It felt like tracing the roots of rock and roll
backward through time.

In the late 1980s,
another band appeared − Guns N' Roses.

They carried the same dangerous rock and roll spirit,
and in many ways, Hanoi Rocks played an important role
in connecting generations of rock music.

When I was a teenager,
I could not see Hanoi Rocks live.

But in 2002,
I finally saw the reunited band
at Summer Sonic in Japan.

It was a wonderful experience.

At the same event,
I was also able to see Guns N' Roses.

I also remember that many musicians
and well-known people were in the crowd.
It felt like a gathering of rock fans
from the same generation.

That atmosphere made the experience
even more special.

In the late 1990s,
I finally saw the Rolling Stones live
during their world tour in Japan.

The concert in Fukuoka
was deeply moving for me.

For me, Hanoi Rocks were not just another band.

They were a bridge −
between generations,
between styles,
and between memories.

ハノイロックス − 私のロックンロールの旅をつないだ架け橋

子供の頃、
私はローリング・ストーンズを聴いて育った。

それが私にとって最初のロックンロールであり、
耳の基準になったバンドだった。

そして中学生になった頃、
リアルタイムで出会ったのがハノイロックスだった。

きっかけは音楽雑誌「ミュージック・ライフ」。
メイクやスカーフ、派手な外見で、
どこかグラムっぽい雰囲気を持っていたが、
本質はロックンロールバンドだった。

彼らの音楽は、
日本人にも親和性の高い、
キャッチーなメロディを持っていた。

「Don't You Ever Leave Me」や
「Malibu Beach Nightmare」、
そして「Cheyenne」のような曲は、
自然に耳に入り、
とても入りやすいロックだった。

そして印象的だったのが、
アンディ・マッコイのギターだ。

決して難しいことをしているわけではないが、
ロックンロールの匂いがする、
とても格好いいギターだった。

ハノイロックスのメンバーが
ジョニー・サンダースからの影響を語っていたことで、
私は彼の存在を知り、
さらにニューヨーク・ドールズへと遡っていった。

ロックの歴史を、
後から辿っていくような感覚だった。

1980年代後半には、
ガンズ・アンド・ローゼズというバンドが登場した。

彼らは同じロックンロールの精神を持ち、
ハノイロックスは、
世代をつなぐ重要な役割を果たしたバンドだったと思う。

中学生の頃は、
ハノイロックスのライブを見ることはできなかった。

しかし2002年、
サマーソニックで再結成した彼らを
ついに自分の目で見ることができた。

それは本当に素晴らしい体験だった。

そして同じイベントで、
ガンズ・アンド・ローゼズも観ることができた。

客席には、
ミュージシャンや有名人の姿も多く見かけた。

同じ時代を生きてきたロック好きが
自然に集まっているような、
そんな空気を感じたのを覚えている。

その雰囲気も含めて、
とても特別な体験だった。

さらに1990年代後半には、
ローリング・ストーンズのワールドツアーで
福岡公演を観ることができた。

子供の頃に聴いていたバンドを
大人になってから目の前で観る。

それは、
とても感慨深い出来事だった。

私にとってハノイロックスは、
単なる一つのバンドではない。

世代をつなぎ、
スタイルをつなぎ、
そして記憶をつないだ
「架け橋」のような存在だった。
