1. Early Encounters with Rock Music

When I was in the lower grades of elementary school,
I first encountered rock music.

My older brother had a strong influence on me,
and music was always present in our home.
There were instruments around − an electric guitar, a bass,
and an electronic organ.

At that time, I learned about
The Beatles
and
The Rolling Stones.

For a child, The Beatles were easy to understand.
They had melodies you could follow and songs you could sing.

A song like
Yesterday
was simple, beautiful, and memorable.

The Rolling Stones also had melodic songs,
such as
As Tears Go By.

But what stayed with me were different kinds of songs.

Songs like
Jumpin' Jack Flash
and
Brown Sugar
were not just songs −
they were movement, rhythm, and energy.

It was not the melody that struck me.
It was the sound itself.

2. Growing Up in the 1970s

I was a child in the 1970s.

That period shaped my musical instincts in ways
I only understood much later.

The Rolling Stones continued their career
into the 1990s and beyond.

I respect what they have done.

To keep performing,
to keep moving forward −
that is something truly admirable.

But for me,
the music that lives deepest inside
belongs to an earlier time.

It is not a matter of quality.
It is a matter of time.

The sound that formed my connection to music
came from the era
when I first listened as a child.

That is where my origin lies.

3. A More Complex Direction

As I grew older,
my musical direction became more complex.

I am not a traditional rock and roll musician.
My music does not sit neatly inside one category.

It carries the experimental spirit of
The Beatles,
the sonic exploration of
Einstürzende Neubauten,
the minimalism of
The Velvet Underground,
the raw energy of punk,
and the creative direction of post-punk −
bands like
Bauhaus,
The Cure,
and
Public Image Ltd.

4. The Role of the Guitar

One thing that clearly reflects this
is my approach to the guitar.

I rarely play guitar solos.

Not because I cannot,
but because I do not always feel the need to.

My role has never been to step forward
and display technique.

My role is to support the music
and create space.

I believe music is not only about notes.

It is also about atmosphere,
tension,
and movement.

In many ways,
I see the guitar
as a tool for shaping air.

5. Back to the Beginning

When I trace everything back −
not to influence,
but to the very beginning −

it always leads me
to the same place.

The Rolling Stones
are not simply a band I admire.

They are my origin.

1. ロックとの最初の出会い

私がロック音楽に初めて触れたのは、
小学校の低学年の頃だった。

兄の影響も大きかったし、
家にはいつも音楽があった。
エレキギターやベース、
そして電子オルガンが身近にあった。

その頃、私は
ビートルズとストーンズを知った。

子供にとって、ビートルズは分かりやすい音楽だった。
メロディがあり、歌える曲があった。

「Yesterday」のような曲は、
シンプルで、美しく、印象に残る。

ストーンズにも
「As Tears Go By」のような
メロディの美しい曲はあった。

しかし、私の記憶に残っているのは、
別の種類の曲だった。

音楽とのつながりを作った音。

私の起源がある。

3. より複雑になっていった音楽

年齢を重ねるにつれて、
私の音楽の方向性は少しずつ複雑になっていった。

私は、いわゆるロックンロールの音楽家ではない。
私の音楽は、一つのジャンルにきれいに収まるものではない。

そこには、
ビートルズの実験性、
ノイバウテンの音の発想、
ベルベッツのミニマリズム、
そしてパンクの衝動、
さらにポストパンクの方向性がある。

4. ギターの役割

それを最もよく表しているのが、
私のギターの弾き方かもしれない。

私は、ギターソロをあまり弾かない。

必要だと感じないことが多いからだ。

私の役割は、
前に出て技術を見せることではなく、
音楽を支え、
空間を作ることだと思っている。

音楽は音符だけでできているわけではない。
雰囲気や緊張感、
そして流れも音楽の一部だ。

ある意味で、
私にとってギターは
空気を形作るための道具なのだと思う。

5. すべての始まりへ

すべてを辿っていくと、
影響ではなく、
もっと最初のところに戻っていく。

そしてそこには、
いつもストーンズがいる。

彼らは単なる憧れのバンドではない。

私の起源なのだ。
