Visage were not simply a synth-pop group.
They represented a moment when music, fashion, nightlife, and visual identity merged into a completely new form of culture.

I first became aware of Visage through Japanese music magazines such as Music Life.
At the time, the atmosphere surrounding the band already felt mysterious and sophisticated.
And when I heard “Fade to Grey,” I immediately felt that unique cold beauty and European elegance that defined the early 1980s British scene.

Formed in 1978 and led by Steve Strange, Visage became one of the symbolic groups of the New Romantic movement.
Their sound was electronic, cinematic, and emotionally distant, reflecting the atmosphere of late-night clubs rather than traditional rock venues.

Visage were deeply connected to the legendary Blitz nightclub scene in London.
That world later influenced artists such as Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Culture Club, and the young Boy George.
The Blitz scene transformed British youth culture by combining fashion, performance, nightlife, and music into a single identity.

What made Visage special was not simply catchy songs, but atmosphere.
“Fade to Grey” felt less like ordinary pop music and more like the soundtrack to a beautiful, futuristic European night.
Their music captured loneliness, elegance, artificial beauty, and modern urban emotion all at once.

For Velvet Ashes, Visage are important because they helped define the emotional and visual architecture of early 1980s British alternative culture.
The cold elegance, visual aesthetics, and sense of distance found in Visage still echo through gothic, darkwave, and atmospheric music today.

Visageを最初に知ったのは、やはり『ミュージック ライフ』だった。
当時の誌面には、既にロンドンの新しいクラブ文化の空気が漂っていて、Visageはその中心にいるような存在に見えた。

そして実際に “Fade to Grey” を聴いた時、その冷たく美しい雰囲気に強く惹かれた。
あれは単なるポップ ソングではなかった。
夜のヨーロッパ、人工的な美しさ、孤独、未来感、そして都会の静かな退廃感まで含んだ音楽だったと思う。

Visageは1978年に結成されたイギリスのニュー ロマンティック／シンセポップ プロジェクトであり、1980年代初頭のロンドン クラブ文化を象徴する存在だった。
中心人物であるSteve Strangeは、単なるボーカリストではなく、Blitzクラブ シーンそのものを体現するような人物だった。

当時のロンドンでは、Covent Gardenに存在した伝説的クラブ「Blitz」が、新しい若者文化の中心になっていた。
そこでは、音楽、ファッション、化粧、美意識、ジェンダー感覚、夜の空気までもが、一つの文化として融合していた。

Velvet AshesにとってVisageが重要なのも、そのためである。

それらは今も、Velvet Ashesの世界観の中に静かに流れ続けている。
