Depeche Mode were a rare presence − a band that brought a sense of dark spirituality into electronic music.

In the early 1980s, synthesizer-based music was still often treated as something futuristic, stylish, and lightweight.
But Depeche Mode injected those electronic sounds with deeply human emotions: loneliness, anxiety, desire, faith, guilt.

Even in their early work, there was already a strong new wave pop sensibility.
But from Black Celebration onward, their world became increasingly darker, more spiritual, more cinematic.
