The Cure are one of the most influential bands in post-punk and gothic rock history, known for their melancholic melodies and atmospheric sound.
Their music evolved from dark minimalism to expansive alternative rock, shaping the emotional identity of modern gothic and alternative music.
This article explores their role in defining the emotional and sonic landscape of post-punk and gothic rock.
British post-punk / gothic rock band formed in 1976.
The Cure were never simply a gothic rock band.
They were a band that transformed loneliness, loss, fragility, and emotional shadows themselves into music.
Their early work carried a cold wave sense of isolation and emotional claustrophobia.
But as time went on, their sound evolved into something far more dream-like, emotional, and atmospheric.
What left the strongest impression on me was the presence of Robert Smith.
The disheveled black hair.
The blurred eye makeup.
The fragile and unstable vocal expression.
He possessed a completely different kind of individuality from the traditional image of a rock star.
There was vulnerability in his voice rather than strength.
And I think it was precisely that vulnerability that made The Cure’s music so special.
On Pornography, the band created an overwhelming sense of darkness and psychological confinement pushed to the absolute limit.
Heavy repetitive bass lines.
Guitars sinking deep into space.
Drums that echoed with constant unease.
It went far beyond simply being “dark music.”
The album felt more like the sound of an inner psychological landscape.
But by the time of Disintegration, that darkness had transformed into something more beautiful, emotional, and dreamlike.
Deep reverb.
Floating synth textures.
Guitar lines that felt like endless night.
Their music sounded like the emotion of walking alone through a rain-soaked city after midnight.
And personally, songs like Just Like Heaven and Friday I'm in Love had an enormous impact on me.
The Cure were never only dark.
There was also transparency, pop sensibility, and an almost youthful sense of lightness within their music.
The “Just Like Heaven” video is still burned into my memory even now.
That dream-like visual atmosphere.
The floating sensation.
The beauty of reality and fantasy slowly dissolving into each other.
I also spent countless hours listening to Disintegration and Wish.
Within The Cure’s music, darkness and beauty, melancholy and pop, fragility and romanticism all coexisted simultaneously.
That sensibility has deeply influenced the atmospheric guitars, nocturnal mood, dream-like textures, and emotional melodic sensibility within Velvet Ashes.
Especially the idea that emotion does not always need to be directly expressed － that it can instead drift through space as atmosphere and lingering afterglow － is something I learned deeply from The Cure.

そこには、「暗い音楽」という言葉だけでは説明できない、精神世界そのもののような緊張感があった。
一方で、『Disintegration』になると、その darkness はより美しく、幻想的な emotional atmosphere へと変化していく。
深い reverb。
浮遊する synth textures。
終わりのない夜のような guitar lines。
その音楽は、まるで雨の降る都市を一人で歩いている時の感情そのものだった。
そして、自分にとって特に大きかったのは、『Just Like Heaven』や『Friday I’m in Love』の存在だった。
The Cureは dark なだけではない。
そこには、透明感のある pop sensibility や、少年性のような lightness も共存していた。
「Just Like Heaven」のMVは、今でも強く脳裏に焼き付いている。
あの dream-like な映像感覚。
浮遊感。
現実と幻想の境界が曖昧になるような美しさ。
また、『Disintegration』や『Wish』は、本当に何度も聴き込んだアルバムだった。
The Cureの音楽には、

1970年代の後半から現在まで続いているバンドは、極めて稀。
まさにパンク・ムーブメントの1976年、ロンドン郊外のサセックス州クローリーで、ロバート・スミスによってキュアーの前身バンドである「イージー・キュアー」が結成。
イージー・キュアーは、ドイツのレーベルであるアリオラ・ハンザと契約したものの、タイミングが悪くその頃レーベルは、JAPANの売り出し中で折り合いがつかずレコードも発表できないまま契約を解消。
1978年マイケル・デンプシー、ローレンス・トルハーストの三人でキュアーとして活動を始める。
